Badge of the RAF - Royal Air Force

The badge of the Royal Air Force is an heraldic emblem used to represent the RAF, featuring an Albatross on top of a circlet - which is surmounted by a crown.

In heraldic terms the badge is: "In front of a circle inscribed with the motto Per Ardua Ad Astra and ensigned by the Imperial Crown an eagle volant and affronty Head lowered and to the sinister". There have been many debates over the years whether the bird was originally meant to be an albatross or an eagle, the consensus is towards it being an eagle.

Motto of the RAF - Royal Air Force

The motto ‘Per ardua ad astra’ means "Through adversity to the stars" or can be "Through struggle to the stars". Dating from 1912, this is the motto of the Royal Air Force and other Commonwealth air forces such as the RAAF, RCAF, and RNZAF.

The history of the United Kingdom Royal Air Force - spanning nearly a century of British military aviation.

The RAF was founded in 1918, toward the end of the Great War, WW1, by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. After the Great War, the RAF was greatly reduced in size and in the years leading up to WW2 it was used to "police" the British Empire. The RAF underwent large scale expansion both prior to and during World War 2.

During WW2 it was largely responsible for the aerial defence of Great Britain, the strategic bombing campaign against Germany and German Forces and tactical support to the British Army all around the world.

During the Cold War, the RAF main role was the defence of continental Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union, including responsibility for the UK's nuclear deterrent. After the Cold War, the RAF has been involved in multiple large scale operations, including the Gulf War, the Kosovo War, the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War.
